Although all of the Areas are oriented towards developing the potential and skills of the individual member, the Individual Area of Opportunity devotes special attention to preparing young leaders. In a rapidly changing world, those who expect to succeed professionally and personally must be avid and continuous learners, constantly striving to develop their own talents, and adapting these talents to their circumstances. In grooming tomorrow's leaders, JCI is cultivating responsible, versatile, skilled young adults with the knowledge and confidence needed to thrive in in the area of training, and others. This is accomplished by offering a diverse range of activities designed to enhance the individual's potential. A wide array of training seminars, from Personal Dynamics and Effective Speaking to Team Building and Debating Skills are offered through chapters worldwide. More experienced members who wish to conduct seminars themselves may enroll in JCI PRESENTER, JCI TRAINER, and JCI DESIGNER courses for aspiring and advanced trainers. JCI also offers opportunities for development at national conventions, Area Conferences, and World Congress, where world-class trainers lead engaging sessions on important contemporary themes.
This section presents a great opportunity to become a trainer. Though some aspects attempt to inform, educate, or train, while others honor individual distinction or achievement, clearly almost all of the opportunities in JCI could be classified under Individual, for all of them bring benefits to the individual members involved. The sole purpose of the Junior Chamber movement is to meet the personal and career development needs of young people. It will provide the opportunity for personal development, leadership training, business and entrepreneurship through community service, organizational involvement and business networking and activities. Everything in JCI is Individual Development. Every project, every meeting, every experience expands the abilities of Jaycees. Each new situation presents opportunities and choices. Actions are the results of choosing. Personal growth is achieved through each set of circumstances. Ideas are conceived. Beliefs are strengthened. Opinions are formed. Memories are mentally filed away for future reference and use. Chapter projects serve as a vehicle for hands-on learning. “Off-the-job” training while benefiting society is how Junior Chamber members transform classroom learning into self-improvement. All the skills to plan, promote, and manage a Junior Chamber project are directly transferable to real-life situations. Community Development projects are the laboratory where Junior Chamber members learn while doing.
To supplement the multitude of personal development experiences available through involvement in the Junior Chamber organization, resource materials are available to help members expand their knowledge. Many chapters and regional organizations have developed comprehensive programs to help build personal and professional skills. Junior Chamber International also offers a wide variety of programs and materials, including its Training Institute programs, JCI Presenter, JCI Trainer, and JCI Designer, to train and develop new Junior Chamber trainers and instructors. Each member is an unfinished product. Each member has “rough edges” to smooth and exceptional skills to polish. Each individual must be a seeker of knowledge! Opportunity knocks but once, and often so softly that it’s unnoticed. To grow as individuals, members must proactively seek experiences and situations that stretch their limitations and expand their minds. It has been said, “You only get out of something what you put into it.” In the Junior Chamber, it could be more accurately stated, “You only get out of your Junior Chamber experience what you take from it.” The opportunity to grow as a person is here. But members must recognize those opportunities and use them to their advantage; to selfishly strive to improve. Building better people is what the Junior Chamber is all about! The JCI Malaysia’ National Training Institute believes in the principle that “Every JCI Member is a leader and every leader is a trainer.” |
